Carolina University men's basketball looks to regroup and turn narrow defeats into momentum as the Bruins travel to face the University of Pikeville in a non-conference matchup on Saturday, January 10, with tipoff scheduled for 2 p.m. in Pikeville, Kentucky.
Carolina enters the contest at 3–12 overall, coming off two close losses to open the New Year. The Bruins fell by three points at Milligan University before dropping a four-point decision on the road at Voorhees University, continuing a stretch in which Carolina has been competitive deep into games but searching for the final breakthrough.
Despite the record, Head Coach Jake Heck has seen growth from his group as conference play begins to take shape.
"We've been right there in these last two games, and that tells us a lot about our effort and belief," Heck said. "Now it's about finishing possessions, valuing the basketball, and staying connected defensively against a very disciplined opponent."
The Bruins are averaging 76.4 points per game while shooting 45.6 percent from the field, with rebounding remaining a strength at 40.6 boards per contest, including a positive rebound margin on the season. Carolina will look to leverage that physicality against one of the most efficient teams in the NAIA.
Pikeville presents a significant challenge, entering the matchup 15–2 overall and a perfect 9–0 in Appalachian Athletic Conference play, currently sitting atop the AAC standings. The Bears boast one of the nation's most balanced attacks, averaging 83.6 points per game while shooting nearly 49 percent from the floor and over 38 percent from three-point range.
Coach Heck emphasized the importance of composure and discipline against a veteran Pikeville lineup.
"They're experienced, they share the ball well, and they make you pay for mistakes," Heck said. "For us, it's about embracing the challenge, playing with confidence, and competing for 40 minutes."
Saturday's contest provides Carolina an opportunity to test itself against one of the NAIA's top programs while continuing to build toward conference play. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. as the Bruins look to put together a complete road performance against the AAC leaders.
