Black Mountain, NC - The 10-man Piedmont International University team (1-1-1) fought hard playing a man down for the last half hour of the game, but ultimately fell 3-2 to the Montreat Cavaliers (3-2) on Wednesday night.
The game was a tale of two halves as the Bruins were able to jump to an early lead in the first half. Sophomore midfielder Jason Mejia Moreno picked out freshman winger Mario Salinas who converted the finish past the charging goalkeeper for the early lead in the 13th minute.
PIU would double their lead in the 24th minute as Salinas split two defenders with a clever pass, finding junior forward Brayan Gomez just inside the box. Gomez was able to curl it with his right foot into the far post, giving the Bruins a 2-0 halftime lead.
In the 62nd minute, the game would drastically change as junior defender Jorge Espinoza received his second yellow card of the match, resulting in a red card. The Bruins were forced to play a man down for the remainder of the game.
The Cavaliers gained a new energy with the man-advantage. Despite the strong resistance from the entire Bruins team, Montreat found the breakthrough in the 79th minute. Raphael Duarte got loose down the left side and cut the ball back to Tom Hausdoerfer in the middle of the box for a goal.
Montreat would push on and tie the game in the 84th minute. Hausdoerfer would involve himself again, finding Duarte on an overlap to his left and was able to slot past sophomore goalkeeper Jeremiah Gibbs.
Piedmont pushed for the lead as Salinas got in on the action again forcing a tough save from the Cavalier's goalkeeper. It was Montreat who would take the late lead as Francisco Prado's cross on the ground found Carlos Hernandez for the final goal in the 86th minute.
The Cavaliers held the shot advantage in the game 19-9 as Gibbs would register six saves in goal for the Bruins.
"It's a disappointing result after being up 2-0 and in control of the game for 60 minutes," said Head Coach Craig Golding. "The red card completely changed the game, and we made it difficult for ourselves. We'll have to learn from it, move forward, and get ready for Johnson & Wales on Saturday."
The Bruins will be on the road again this Saturday as they travel to Pineville, NC to play Johnson and Wales University at 4:45 pm.
