Winston-Salem, NC -- Piedmont International University's Softball team will be hosting the NCCAA South Regional Championship tomorrow afternoon against #1 Erskine College.
PIU had a record-breaking season of 8-18 and 2-4 in the conference. They recorded big wins against Alice Lloyd (8-2 and 14-6), Allen University (12-4 and 10-2), and Hiwassee College (17-12 and 4-3). The Bruins played a challenging schedule facing NCAA DII and DIII teams, such as Pfeiffer University, North Greenville University, and Brevard College.
The Bruins were led offensively by
Missy Smith, who holds the team's highest batting average of .446,
Kayli Cook and
Amber Newsom who scored 14 runs apiece, and
Mckenzie Mastin and
Desiree Torres, who scored nine and ten runs respectively. This season the pitching was run by Torres,
Jessyca Cardona, Smith, and
Ralee McGee, who gave up 174 runs total. In the field,
Sarah Marshall,
Savannah Presley, Cook, and
Olivia Bullard made a significant defensive impact with some of the highest fielding percentages.
Erskine College is coming into the Regional Championship with a 33-14 record. This season, they had smashing victories against Concord University, 10-2, Chowan University, 11-1, Lees McCrae College, 10-0, and University of Mount Olive, 10-1. Erskine, unfortunately, was defeated earlier in the Conference Carolina Softball Championship by Limestone College and North Greenville University.
Tomorrow's championship is a double elimination tournament with games played at 2 and 4 PM (and 6 PM if necessary).
