LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — The Carolina University Bruins softball team made program history on Wednesday, earning their first-ever berth in the Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) Softball Tournament as the No. 5 seed. Competing in the double-elimination tournament at Georgia Gwinnett College, the Bruins opened play against No. 4 seed Alice Lloyd College, ultimately falling 4-1 in their tournament debut.
Despite the result, Carolina showed resilience throughout the contest, highlighted by a strong pitching performance and late-game push at the plate.
Alice Lloyd struck early, plating a run in the first inning before capitalizing on defensive miscues to add two more in the second and another in the third. Carolina starter Anni Bergmeier settled in after the early innings, going the distance with six innings pitched while allowing just two earned runs and working out of multiple jams.
Offensively, the Bruins found momentum late. Emily Wilson sparked the seventh-inning rally with a double down the right field line, followed by a single from Bergmeier to put runners in scoring position. Stacie Sanders delivered a sacrifice fly to bring home Carolina's lone run, cutting the deficit to 4-1.
Carolina finished with five hits on the day, including doubles from Emily Wilson and Emma-Lea Cabral, while Anni Bergmeier also contributed two hits at the plate.
Interim Head Coach Danielle Brooks reflected on the team's historic milestone and competitive effort:
"I'm incredibly proud of this group for what they've accomplished this season. Making the CAC Tournament for the first time is a testament to their hard work and belief in each other. While today didn't go our way, we fought until the final out and showed the kind of grit we'll need moving forward."
With the loss, Carolina shifts its focus quickly to an elimination matchup against Westcliff University on Thursday, April 30 at 12 p.m. at Georgia Gwinnett College. The Bruins will look to extend their historic postseason run and continue building momentum in the double-elimination format.
