Box Score 2 Winston-Salem, NC -- The Piedmont International University softball team earned their first wins of the season on Tuesday (Feb. 26) after beating Allen University 8-2 and 14-6 in a non-conference doubleheader.
The Bruins wasted no time as
Jessyca Cardona, and
Olivia Bullard earned the first runs of the game early on. In the second inning,
Mckenzie Mastin got ahold of the ball and drove it over the left field fence for her first home run of the season.
Sarah Marshall and
Amber Newsom got a run each in the following inning. Allen got on the board in the fifth with two runs, but the Bruins pitching by
Desiree Torres shut the Yellow Jackets down for the remainder of the game. The Bruins would tack on three runs in the sixth after a triple by Cardona.
Allen would be the team jumping out to an early lead in game two after plating a pair in the top of the first, but the Bruins did not let their led last long. Cardona made her way around the bases in the first inning at-bat, making the score 1-2. The score remained until the bottom of the third when Bullard got up to bat with the bases loads. A dropped pop fly to center field yielded a run for
Jacky Salazar and
Kayli Cook. The Bruins expanded their lead by four as Newsom, Bullard, and Mastin made their way home.Â
Allen tied up the game (6-6) in the top of the fourth.
Missy Smith entered in as the relief pitcher for the Bruins and stopped the Yellow Jackets from scoring the remainder of the game. The game was called at the end of the 6th inning after the Bruins added four runs in both the 4th and 6th inning.Â
The Bruins will be on the road Thursday (Feb. 28) as the face off against Methodist University for a doubleheader. First pitch is at 2 PM.
