Winston-Salem, N.C. — A new era begins for Carolina University Women's Basketball as Head Coach Hannah Latiolais enters her first season at the helm of the Bruins. Latiolias, now in her third year overall as a collegiate head coach following previous tenures at two institutions, looks to bring fresh energy and a winning culture to a program poised for growth and success.
The Bruins return four key players from last year's 15–9 squad: Maria Beltran, Janiya Mitchell, Carley Bolden, and Jakyiiah Willis, who redshirted last season. In addition, Nadia Jackson and Shantazia Gordon, both members of last year's team, return to the program in new roles as Graduate Assistants, joining Latiolias in building a strong foundation for the future.
This year's roster features 13 newcomers, including two freshmen, rounding out a 17-player team that blends returning experience with exciting new talent.
Coach Latiolias' Expectations
Coach Latiolais has made it clear that expectations are high from day one.
"Winning is expected. We want to make the national tournament, build a true family within our program, and celebrate every elevation—big or small. We're going to emphasize positivity, energy, commitment, and having fun."
With a focus on accountability, unity, and enthusiasm, the Bruins aim to make immediate strides both on and off the court.
Team Mentality
When asked about the team's mindset heading into the 2025–26 season, Latiolais emphasized toughness and perseverance:
"We're going to be aggressive. We can't roll over when things get hard. This group is learning to fight through adversity and respond with resilience."
That mentality will serve as the backbone of a team determined to compete every night in the Carolina Athletic Conference and beyond.
Defensive Identity
Defense remains a defining trait under Coach Latiolais.
"We pride ourselves on defense. We want to rebound aggressively, play with structure and high energy, apply pressure, and force turnovers."
The Bruins will look to set the tone with a relentless, high-pressure defensive system that demands intensity from every player.
Offensive Philosophy
On the offensive end, Carolina University plans to showcase a fast-paced, unselfish style of play.
"We want to play fast, always hunt for opportunities, stay in constant motion, and move the ball. Our focus is on being unselfish and playing together."
Fans can expect a dynamic, up-tempo approach centered around quick transitions and team-oriented execution.
Building Excitement
As she prepares for her debut season, Coach Latiolais expressed excitement about the group's chemistry and character.
"What excites me most about this team is how quickly they clicked. They hold each other accountable, have strong personalities, but still know how to have fun and act like a family."
With a talented roster and an energetic new leader, Carolina University Women's Basketball looks to continue its winning tradition and make a statement in the 2025–26 campaign.
The 2025-26 campaign gets started as they travel to Georgetown College in Kentucky for 1pm tipoff on Saturday November 1.
