WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The 2026 season has arrived for Carolina University Men's Soccer as the Bruins prepare to open a new campaign Saturday, August 22, against Ave Maria University. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Bryan Park Field No. 3.
Head Coach Craig Golding and the Bruins enter the new season with a retooled roster featuring six returners and 14 newcomers. Carolina lost seven players to graduation following the 2025 campaign, creating opportunities for a new group to step into significant roles this fall.
Last season ended in disappointment for the Bruins, who fell to Columbia International University in the NCCAA South Region Championship. The loss kept Carolina from advancing to the NCCAA National Championships and ended the program's pursuit of what would have been an eighth consecutive national tournament appearance.
That result has provided motivation throughout the offseason as Carolina looks to regroup, establish a new identity and build toward another postseason run.
"There is a lot of excitement around this group as we get ready to begin the season," Golding said. "With 14 newcomers joining six returners, we have spent a lot of time building chemistry and establishing what we want our identity to be. Last season did not end the way we wanted, and our guys understand the standard that has been set within this program. We are excited about the opportunity in front of us and are ready to compete together and continue building this program."
Saturday's opener will provide an immediate test for the Bruins against an Ave Maria squad that already has a match under its belt. The Gyrenes enter Saturday 1-0 after earning a 1-0 victory over CIU on Thursday, August 20.
For Carolina, the opener marks the beginning of a fresh opportunity for a roster blending a small group of experienced returners with a large class of newcomers. Establishing chemistry early will be important as the Bruins work toward returning to postseason contention.
