Bruins Baseball Sweep Saturday Twin Bill, Claim Series Over IU Columbus

MOCKSVILLE, N.C. – After splitting the twin bill on Friday, Carolina University Baseball returned to the diamond on Saturday, February 14 for another doubleheader against IU Columbus, this time completing the sweep with wins in both contests to secure the weekend series victory at Mando Field.

Game 1 – Carolina 4, IU Columbus 0

Carolina opened the day with a strong all-around performance, using timely hitting and dominant pitching to shut out IU Columbus, 4-0.

The Bruins struck early, plating two runs in the bottom of the first inning before adding insurance runs in the third and sixth. A solo home run from Danny Gonzalez highlighted the offensive effort, while Leland Brown and Miles Tavarez each drove in runs to extend the lead.

On the mound, Paxton Tucker delivered an impressive outing, earning the win after tossing five shutout innings with eight strikeouts while allowing just two hits. The bullpen combination of Alex Prevost and Abraham Leal closed the door, preserving the shutout and limiting IU Columbus to three total hits.

Game 2 – Carolina 12, IU Columbus 7

The Bruins' offense erupted in Game 2, powering Carolina to a 12-7 victory and the doubleheader sweep.

After IU Columbus jumped out to an early lead, Carolina answered with a massive six-run third inning to seize control of the game. Chandler Smithart led the offensive charge with a home run and four RBIs, while Chase Lee added three RBIs and multiple extra-base hits. The Bruins compiled 11 hits and capitalized on defensive miscues to build separation.

On the mound, Tanner Buteau earned the win in relief, with the pitching staff combining to manage IU Columbus' late offensive push and secure the victory.

From the Dugout

Associate Head Coach Logan Conklin praised the team's response and execution throughout the day:

"I'm proud of the way our guys bounced back and competed today. After splitting yesterday, it was important for us to come out focused and finish the series strong. We got quality innings on the mound, played solid defense, and had timely hits up and down the lineup. It's a great step forward for this group as we continue to grow early in the season."

With the sweep, Carolina claims the weekend series and builds momentum heading into the upcoming week.

The Bruins return to action on Tuesday, February 17, hosting Averett University at Mando Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
