BLUEFIELD, VA - After enduring a challenging stretch marked by narrow defeats, Carolina University men's basketball responded with resilience and execution on Monday night, earning a 92–87 road victory over Bluefield University at The Dome on January 19.
Carolina entered the contest determined to turn the page after opening the new year with five losses, three of which were decided by three points or fewer. The early portion of the game reflected the team's recent struggles, as the contest remained tightly contested through the first 10 minutes. From there, Carolina began to create separation, building a six-point cushion and eventually stretching the lead to as many as nine before heading into halftime with a 37–30 advantage.
The second half proved to be a test of composure, as Bluefield made several runs to keep the game within reach. Carolina countered each surge with timely shooting and steady play at the free-throw line, maintaining control down the stretch to secure the five-point victory.
Offensively, Carolina was led by Shawn Woodson, who poured in a game-high 29 points, including a blistering 5-for-6 performance from three-point range. DJ Evans added 23 points and five assists, while Deuce Ford contributed 14 points and seven rebounds. Carolina shot 45.8 percent from the field and knocked down nine three-pointers on the night, while converting 29 free throws to help seal the win.
Following the game, Head Coach Jake Heck emphasized the importance of perseverance and growth.
"We've been on the wrong side of some close games this season, but tonight our guys stayed together and trusted what we've been working on," Heck said. "This was about effort, execution, and responding the right way. I'm proud of how we competed for a full 40 minutes."
Carolina will look to build on the momentum from Monday's road win as the team continues conference play, aiming to turn hard lessons from earlier in the season into consistent success moving forward as they host CAC Pod at home this weekend.
