Winston-Salem, NC- Carolina University Women's Basketball hosted Paine College tonight for the NCCAA Regional Championship.
The Lady Bruins captured their first NCCAA South Region Title in program history on their home court making for a well-fought victory. After the first quarter, Paine College had their only lead of the night. Maria Beltran closed out the first period with a 3-pointer, making the first quarter score 15-14.
In the second quarter, the Lions could not keep up as the Bruins held a commanding lead. The Blue and Golds' defense was aggressive, only allowing one point in the final six minutes of the second quarter while finishing the half on an 11-point run. Offensively, the Bruins put away five 3-pointers with Bianca Gonzalez leading the way with 3. The 3-point percentage in the second quarter for the Bruins was 62.50%.
Shamya Loman started the third quarter by sinking one in the paint within the first 11 seconds. The Bruins kept the lead finishing the 3rd period 61-47.
In the Fourth quarter, DenAsia Mitchell tallied 15 points for the Blue and Gold making her total 26.
Three Bruins had double-doubles on the night. Shantazia Gordon had 15 points with 12 rebounds, and Shamya Loman tallied 13 points and 16 rebounds. DenAsia Mitchell ended tonight with 26 9 12 one rebound shy of a triple-double. The Bruins finished the night by scoring 29 in the fourth finishing off the Lions 90-68.
The Bruins will be back in action at the NCCAA National Tournament on Wednesday, March 20 in Winona Lake, IN.
