Men’s Volleyball Notches Historic Win at Home

Winston-Salem, NC - Carolina University Men's Volleyball (6-8) hosted St. Andrews (10-8) on Wednesday, March 15th in Williams Gymnasium. The Bruins battled for five sets, resulting in a historic win for the program. Behind an energetic home crowd, Carolina U rallied from being down two sets to one and took the final two sets to win the match.

The Bruins relied on an entire team effort, with players having to fill familiar and unfamiliar roles. "We used ten guys who had to be able to do it all together. That was really cool and it was nice to have them compete," said Coach Bill Ferguson. "Mason (Chambers) was matched up against #23 (Hazem Aldeghafar) so we knew he was gonna get neutralized on offense but Mason was doing a really good job on defense, serving, and passing, and that opened things up for Bryson. I thought that while our middles didn't do a ton statistically, they slowed down some balls that were really important at key times. They really committed and slowed the quick attack down, and we got enough offense out of them to do something. And then Raheem and Tijh were the spark plugs as usual. Raheem had some spectacular plays and he's just such a good leader. They both lead by example, they both hustle their tails off, and tonight every time they got pushed they found a way to get back off the ground and come back, compete, and ultimately win."

Raheem Thomas and Bryson Abernathy led the way offensively with 16 and 10 kills, respectively, while Steven Wilson logged 14 digs. Tijhmir Glasco logged his 1,000th career assist as a Bruin, leading the way with 29 against the Knights.

"I thought we showed more and more competitive IQ and competitive maturity," added Ferguson. "I was really proud of them. They answered the bell - every time we got pushed, we were able to push back. That's a really skilled team and a really competitive team, and they've got some fantastic players. We have our first win streak in program history and we're still going."

The Bruins travel to Reinhardt University next Friday, March 24, to take on another tough NAIA opponent.
