Mocksville, NC - Carolina University Baseball hosted Wheeling University on Saturday, March 4th and Monday, March 6th. The teams played in a double-header on Saturday at 12:00 and 3:00 pm. The first game was a challenging start to the day as both teams struggled to score a run in the first two innings. Wheeling scored a run in the third inning and again in the fifth, but the Bruins couldn't respond. The Cardinals hit a 2 run homerun in the sixth inning to finish with a score of 4-0.Â
The Bruins regrouped and came back with a new energy in the second game. Wheeling started off the game with 5 runs in the top of the first inning and the Bruins answered with 2 runs. Each team came out empty after the second inning but both scored a run in the third to take the score 6-3 for the Cardinals. CU hit a 4 run homerun in the fourth inning and took the lead at 7-6. The Bruins finished the game with another run in the sixth inning for a score of 8-6.Â
Carolina U was the first to score a run in the game on Monday. The Cardinals scored a run in the second inning and 2 more runs in the third inning. The Bruins evened the score at 3-3 with another 2 runs in the fourth inning but Wheeling slid into the lead with 3 runs in the fifth inning to make it 6-3. The scoreboard didn't change for another 3 innings but the Cardinals scored a run in the ninth. The Bruins worked hard to make a comeback and hit a 3 run homerun, but came up shy 6-7.Â
Game 1: Nicholas Mackedon was 2 of 3 and Bryan Deegan was 1 of 3 at the plate. Kaleb Whitaker pitched 5 innings and had 3 strikeouts.Â
Game 2: Nicholas Mackedon had another great game and went 2 for 3 with 5 RBIs and 2 homeruns. Ean Laird was 1 of 3 with an RBI.Â
Game 3: Cade Fletcher was 2 for 3 and hit a 3 run homerun in the ninth inning for the Bruins. Bryan Deegan was 1 for 4 with 2 RBIs. John Kehoe and Ean Laird were each 2 of 4. Nicholas Mackedon pitched 4.2 innings and recorded 6 strikeouts and only had 3 runs. Chase Locklar pitched 1.1 innings and Victor Conrad pitched 2 innings, both recording 2 strikeouts and no runs. Â
