Men’s Soccer Scores Late to Earn Victory

COLUMBIA, SC - Carolina University Men's Soccer played their rival Columbia International University on Saturday, August 27th on the road. The Bruins came off of a 4-1 victory over Emory & Henry, but the Rams were ranked 17th in the NAIA Men's Soccer Pre-season Poll. This would be a true test for CU, especially considering they have never beaten CIU in Men's Soccer. The Bruins were not intimidated by that ranking and scored the first goal at 2:26. The Rams answered shortly after, but by halftime the Bruins were up 3-2. Carolina U stretched the lead to 4-2 in the 68th minute. However, CIU did not give up and scored 2 goals at 79:25 and 80:51 to tie the game. The Rams had all of the momentum and were playing with an advantage because of a first half red card on the Bruins. Despite the challenge, Reynaldo Martinez-Villanueva scored the winning goal in the 84th minute for CU.

Carolina University's offense was well balanced and extremely efficient. The Bruins converted 5 of their 12 shots for goals. Mario Salinas scored his second goal of the season, Francisco Tapia scored twice, Jordan Julien and Reynaldo Martinez-Villanueva each scored their first goal of the season. Joe Reynolds was credited with an assist on Salinas' goal. William Cothill played all 90 minutes in the goal and recorded 10 saves.

This win moves the Bruins to 2-0 on the season after beating two tough opponents. CU will next play at home on Saturday, September 3rd at 7:00 pm when they host Brevard College. Please come out and support the Bruins at home or follow them via livestream from cubruins.com.
