Bruins' Depth Outlasts Clinton

Winston-Salem, NC - Carolina University Women's Volleyball faced Clinton College for the third time this season on their home court on Tuesday, September 27th. Earlier in the season, the Bruins won both matches in a sweep against Clinton, however, this match was far more competitive. CU was in the lead for the majority of the first set but remained only a few points ahead, finishing at 26-24. Clinton answered back, winning the second set 25-22. The Bruins did not let this discourage them and they came back in the third set 25-18. In a tightly contested final set, Carolina University finished the match 25-23 for a final score of 3-1.

Giulia La Longa really stepped up for the short-handed Bruins. La Longa had more touches in the back row but maintained a presence at the net as she recorded 16 kills, a match-high of 4.0 blocks, and 11 digs. Precious Heaven Hollins also had a nice night and recorded 3.0 blocks. Another Bruin that filled a needed role was Chiara Mottola. Mottola had 15 kills and a match-high 20 digs. Carolina University's 6-2 attack was orchestrated well by Keira Zarger and Nicole Laezza. Laezza was solid with 18 assists and 3 aces. Zarger, the true freshman, had a beautiful coming out party with a team-high 20 assists. Despite injuries to some key rotation players, the Bruins utilized their depth to execute and compete at a high level.

CU held on to the 10th spot in this week's NCCAA rankings and now sits at 10-4. Additionally, the Bruins are 5-0 in NCCAA play but will be tested this weekend in Greenville, SC as they play in a tri-match hosted by Bob Jones. Carolina University will open up the weekend against South Region opponent Paine College, and then renew their rivalry with BJU. There will be a livestream available for both matches.
