EASLEY, SC -- Carolina University entered the NCCAA Softball World Series as the #3 seed and faced the #6 seed Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles in their first game. The Bruins opened the game with 2 runs scored in the top of the first inning. The Lady Eagles responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the first. ALC then took the lead with 3 runs in the bottom of the second. After falling down 4-2, the Bruins settled in and got to work. CU was able to score 4 in the top of the fourth inning, but their lead was short lived. The Lady Eagles tied the game at 6-6 with 2 runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Bruins took control of the game for good with 2 homeruns in the top of the sixth inning that scored a combined 4 runs. Carolina University would close out the game with their defense and win their first-ever NCCAA Softball World Series game with a final score of 10-6.
Danielle Brooks started on the mound for the Bruins and would earn the win after 5 innings of work and 3 strike-outs.
Lyric Ryan earned the save by holding ALC scoreless in the final 2 innings of the game. Offensively,
Maggie Smith and
Kalea Bolch were the heroes who hit bombs in the top of the sixth to secure the win.
Maggie Smith was 1-4 on the day with a 2-run homerun (3).
Kalea Bolch went 1-3 and her 2-run homerun was a team-high 5th of the season and 2nd in the last 3 games.
Missy Smith was also fantastic as she reached based in every plate appearance. Missy went 2-2 with a double, scored 2 runs, and drew 2 walks.
The Bruins will continue Pool Play against #2 seed Concordia University (MI). After Pool Play, the top 4 teams will be cross-bracketed for the semi-finals and winners will play for the Championship.
