JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Carolina University Softball is on the road playing in the NCCAA South Regional Tournament against Trinity Baptist College. The Bruins and Eagles will face-off in a Best of 3 Series and the winner will earn a bid to the NCCAA National Tournament. Carolina University was the designated home team for Game 1, and the Eagles came out swinging. Trinity Baptist put 2 runs on the board in the first inning. The Bruins were quick to counter with a
Kalea Bolch homerun and took a 3-2 lead. Trinity Baptist would retake the lead in the top of the fourth inning and be up 4-3. The Eagles were gaining momentum, but in the bottom of the fifith the top of the Bruin order was due up. Carolina University took advantage and scored 3 more runs to take the 6-4 lead. The Eagles attempted a rally in the top of the seventh, but the CU defense took care of business to win Game 1 by a final score of 6-5.
Danielle Brooks pitched the complete game victory for the Bruins in her first post-season appearance. Brooks managed 7 K's and helped out her own cause with an RBI and a walk at the plate.
Kalea Bolch led the offense today. Bolch has come on strong the second half of the season and carried that into Tournament play. She went 1-4 with 4 RBIs and her 4th homerun of the season.
Kayli Cook also continued her excellent season and went 2-4 with a double and 2 runs scored out of the lead-off spot.
Missy Smith also had an extra base hit going 1-3 with a double.
The Bruins now lead the Series 1-0 and need 1 more win to clinch the South Region Title for the first time in school history. Carolina University will play visitor in Game 2 and if necessary the home team in Game 3 on Saturday.Â
