WINSTON-SALEM, NC -- Carolina University hosted the final game of a 3-game series with Johnson University on Saturday, April 17th at Mando Field. The Bruins won both games of a double-header on Friday night against the Royals and needed the series sweep to secure a post season birth. CU started the game with a run in the bottom of the first, but JU was able to tie the game in the second. The Bruins then took charge in the bottom of the third, scoring 5 runs and taking a 6-1 lead. The Royals would not go away and mounted a rally to cut the lead to 6-4 after the top of the fifth. Carolina University found another surge of offense and ran away in the bottom of the fifth. The Bruins scored 7 runs, and a 3-run homer by
Logan Conklin put a bow on this historic victory. Carolina University would go on to win the game by a final score of 14-5 and finish the season with a 14-13 record.
Charlee Edwards was on the mound for this big win and was excellent in his role as a starter. Edwards went 5 innings with 6 Ks and only allowed 2 earned runs.
Hunter Rhineberger came on in relief to close out the last 2 innings and struck out 2 with no earned runs. Offensively,
Logan Conklin led the way going 2-2, drew 2 walks, scored 2 runs, had 5 RBIs and hit his 5th homerun of the season.
Drew Martin went 2-4 with 3 RBIs and 2 of those came off his double in the bottom of the fifth.
Bryan Deegan was great as a lead-off hitter as he went 2-3 with a triple, crossed home 3 times and stole a base. Several other Bruins earned hits in this game as CU collected 15 total hits as a team.
