Baseball Drops Heartbreaker

WINSTON-SALEM, NC -- Bruins Baseball had Bluefield State College in town for the second game of a double-header on Thursday, February 25th. Kaleb Whitaker took the mound for the Bruins in this 7-inning game and was dealing early. The Bruins gave up just 1 run in the third, but answered in the bottom half of the inning to keep the score at 1-1. Carolina University had a slight hiccup in the top of the fourth that brought Charlee Edwards out of the pen. The Bruins gave up 1 run, but escaped the jam mostly unscathed. Carolina University was then able to manufacture 2 runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth to earn their first lead of the day 3-2. After a scoreless fifth inning, Bluefield was able to even the score at 3-3 in the sixth. Bluefield then scored 2 runs (1 unearned) in the top of the 7th to take a 5-3 lead. The Carolina University rally was started by a Kent solo-homerun over the left field wall. Deegan reached on an error and Giboyeaux was hit by a pitch to move the tying run to second and he was the winning-run on first. With a pinch runner in place, a very confusing in-field fly was dropped and then called that led to an odd double-play to end the game. Both sides seemed confused at the ruling, but unfortunately the Bruins fell 5-4.

For the Bruins Whitaker pitched 3 and 1/3 innings giving up just 2 runs on 4 hits with 4 strikeouts. Edwards was also excellent with 3 and 2/3 innings pitched he gave up 6 hits and had 5 strikeouts. Josh Kent was excellent in this one going 2-3 with a double and his first homerun of the year. Kent also scored twice. Drew Martin also went 2-3 with 1 RBI and scored. Grant Harris went 1-2 with a double and a walk.

The Bruins looked much better in the second game and will look to build on that momentum next week. Carolina University will travel to Bluefield, VA to play the Bluefield College Rams in a single game on Tuesday, March 2nd.
