Bruins Softball Runs Away in Season Opener

WINSTON-SALEM, NC -- Carolina University Softball opened up the 2021 campaign with a double-header against Montreat College on Wednesday, February 17. Danielle Brooks took the mound for the Bruins in the first game of the day. Brooks opened up the day strong with 3 strike-outs in the first inning. The Bruins were running the bases early and were able to score a run in the opening inning. They followed it with another run in the second. Brooks continued to deal on the mound and CU was able to blow the game wide open in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded and 2 outs, Kayli Cook sent a ball to the fence and walked into a base-clearing double. The Bruins rode that commanding 5-0 lead into an 8-2 victory.

Danielle Brooks earned her first win of the year pitching for the Bruins. Brooks only gave up 4 hits and recorded 4 strike-outs across 6 innings of work. The bats were good for the Bruins who were led by Kayli Cook who went 2 for 2 with 3 RBI's and 2 walks. Lyric Ryan went 1 for 1 with 2 walks and scored twice. Timmya Williams and Kalea Bolch each went 2 for 4 and scored a run. However, it was the baserunning for the Bruins that stole the show. Carolina University stole 11 bases on the day and were constantly putting pressure on their opponent.

Carolina University will look to ride this momentum into the second game of the day against Montreat.
