WINSTON-SALEM, NC -- Carolina University Softball hosted Montreat College for the second game of a double-header on Wednesday, February 17th. The Bruins had opened up the day with a win and appeared to carry over the momentum into the second game. After allowing just 1 run despite a bases-loaded jam in the first inning, CU scored 3 unanswered runs to be up 3-1 heading into the third. Montreat got one back, but the Bruins were still up 3-2 going into the fourth inning. The Cavaliers were able to capitalize on some unique situations to score 6 in the frame and take control of the game. Despite good fight from the Bruins, the Cavaliers were able to split the series with an 11-3 victory.
The Bruins were led by
Maggie Smith and
Kayli Cook. Smith went 2 for 3 with a double and 2 RBI's. Cook had a big triple to earn an RBI and scored twice. After the game, the coaching staff was still very positive about this team. Coach Bass said, "It was great for us as a program to get a chance to play softball again. We did a lot of things well and obviously have some stuff to work on, but I really like this team and believe in the talent we have."
Carolina University (1-1) will be in action next against NCCAA foe, Columbia International University. The Rams will host the Bruins for a double-header on Thursday, February 25th.
