WINSTON-SALEM, NC -- Carolina University Men's Soccer hosted NCAA DII Southern Wesleyan on Thursday, September 30th. The Bruins defense was tested early, but seemed to be holding. However, the Warriors earned a penalty shot at 28:13 and converted to take the 1-0 lead. Southern Wesleyan then used that momentum to score another goal in the 42nd minute to take a 2-0 halftime advantage. Out of the break, Carolina University was far more aggressive on offense. The Bruins started to apply a lot of pressure to the SWU defense and created several good opportunities. With about 10 minutes remaining, CU found the back of the net and cut the lead to 1-2. Carolina University had new life and continued to make runs on the Warriors. Unfortunately, the Bruins ran out of time and lost by a final score of 1-2.
Mario Salinas was a huge factor for the Bruin offense. Salinas broke down defenders and created several opportunities for himself and others. Salinas scored the lone goal for the Bruins at 78:59 and that was his 3rd goal of the season. Defensively,
Robin Salge and
Rhys Thomas did a great job of deterring Warrior runs and shots.
Jeremiah Gibbs played all 90 minutes in goal for CU and earned 3 saves.
The Bruins are now 4-5 after two very narrow losses. Carolina University will look to rebound against St. Andrews University on Wednesday, October 6th. The Knights are 6-2-1 with one game remaining prior to their match with CU. This match will take place in Laurinburg, NC at 4:00PM with a LiveStream available.Â
