TOCCOA FALLS, GA -- On Tuesday, January 19th, CU Men's Basketball played the Toccoa Falls Screaming Eagles. The Eagles came out hot and took a quick 8-2 lead. The Bruins didn't panic and got back into the game quickly with a 10-0 run of their own. Each team then spent some time with small leads that never got larger than 5. With just under 4 minutes to go in the half, a Cooper 3 put the Bruins up 6 and was a part of a 13-2 run that gave CU a 43-31 lead at halftime. The Bruins didn't let off the gas and continued to build their lead. After an Aguilera 3, the Bruins found themselves with their biggest lead of the game at 62-41. However, the Eagles didn't quit and made a couple of late 3's to cut the lead back to single digits. Again, Carolina University remained calm and made 4 straight free throws to seal the 77-68 victory.
Andrue Aguilera led all scorers with 26 points and was incredibly efficient shooting 10-14 from the field and 3-6 from downtown.
Micah Cooper and
Dillon Voyles helped out stuffing the stat sheet. Cooper scored 12, grabbed 9 rebounds, and dished 7 assists. Voyles scored 11 points, hauled in 6 boards, had 4 assists, and 2 steals.
Kester Ofoegbu made some timely baskets on his way to 16 points. After the game, the coaching staff was really pleased with how the team is coming together. Coach Williams said, "Of course it's great to get the win, but I'm so proud of this team for trusting in the process and coming to work everyday. There is a lot of talent on this roster, and I don't think they've hit their full potential yet." What Williams didn't mention is how this team has dominated on the defensive end of the floor. Carolina University is currently the #1 Scoring Defense in the Nation allowing opponents just 65.8 points per game.Â
The Bruins have now beat the Eagles twice this season and will host TFC for a third matchup in February. Carolina University will be in action next against Johnson University (TN). The Bruins will travel to Knoxville on Saturday, January 23rd for a 3PM tip-off. The Royals narrowly beat the Bruins 74-71 in their earlier matchup this season.
