FAYETTEVILLE, NC - After playing a close double-header, the Monarchs of Methodist University was able to edge out the Bruins, 3-4 and 8-9, on Thursday (Feb. 27).
Game One
The Lady Bruins trailed 0-2 early on in the game but were able to tie it up with runs from
Kayli Cook and
Lyric Ryan.
As the game went into extra innings, Belle Murakami hit a single for
Mckenzie Mastin to run in. When the Monarchs got up to bat, they were able to record two runs.
Piedmont registered eight hits with Ryan and
Jessyca Cardona hitting two each.
Savanna Nobles pitched four innings, allowing four hits and two runs.
Missy Smith entered as a relief for the final 3.2 innings, allowing two hits and two runs.
Game Two
Starting the game tied after the first inning,
Maggie Smith took the lead with a run. PIU would extend the score to 5-1 as Mastin, Cardona, and
Missy Smith all added a run. In the fourth, they added three more runs from Mastin, Nobles, and Cook.
Methodist was able to make a comeback with three runs of their own in the fourth and eventually took the lead and the win in the sixth by two runs.
Missy Smith registered three of the team's eight hits.
Ryan pitched 3.2 innings, allowing nine hits and seven runs, until Missy came in as relief, throwing 2.1 innings. She allowed only two hits and two runs.
The Lady Bruins will travel to Myrtle Beach, SC, where they will compete in a Spring Break Softball Tournament, playing six games in three days.
