ADVANCE, NC - The PIU Lady Bruins (2-0-1) continued their undefeated run as they took care of business in their home opener with a 3-1 victory over Brevard College Tornados (0-1-1) on Wednesday night.
The Lady Bruins jumped to a quick lead in the 10th minute. Senior winger Kelsie Simpson sent the ball cross into the middle of the box finding sophomore forward
Cierra Josey who hammered it into the back of the net.Â
The Lady Tornados didn't back down as they kept the game close throughout the first half. In the 34th minute, Brevard found the equalizer as Ashley Royster got in behind the Lady Bruin defense and slotted home to sophomore keeper
Ericka Washburn's left side. The game went into the half tied 1-1.Â
After halftime, the home crowd gave the Lady Bruins a boost, as they found themselves on the front foot, forcing an early save from the Tornados keeper. Freshman, defender
Savannah Placie put the Lady Bruins back in front in the 62nd minute, scoring her first collegiate goal on a corner kick from
Ashli Mincey.Â
Just thirteen minutes later, the Lady Bruins would distance themselves from Brevard. Simpson would get on the scoresheet going around a defender before calmly finishing with the right foot, finishing the game 3-1.Â
"I'm proud of the effort the girls put in tonight," said Head Coach
Kyle Neal. "I think apart from the final 15 minutes of the first half we played a perfect game. This group is buying in, and believing that effort and hard work makes the difference right now. We now have two wins against teams that hammered us last year. Everyone is contributing right now."
The Tornados led the shot count for the game 15-12, but it was the Lady Bruins who were able to convert more of the chances. Washburn was excellent for PIU, tallying seven saves on the night.
The Lady Bruins look to continue their undefeated record next Thursday, September 12 as they play host to Randolph College at 6 PM at BB&T Soccer Park in Advance, NC.Â
