Winston-Salem, NC -- PIU's softball team defeated Alice Lloyd College in Thursday's (Mar. 7) doubleheader, 12-4 and 10-2. The Bruins move to 4-6 on the season.
The Bruins came out fast in game one, registering three runs in the first inning.
Savannah Presley and
Desiree Torres add a run each to get the team to five runs in the fourth. The Eagles didn't get on the board until the top of the fifth after they hit a triple, bringing in three runners. At this time, Torres enters in as the relief pitcher for
Jessyca Cardona and would pitch the rest of the day. Torres threw a total of 8 innings and faced 42 batters over the two-game span.Â
At the top of the sixth, Alice Lloyd hit a single and got two runners across home plate. Cardona responded to the close score of 6-5 with a home run.
Mckenzie Mastin would then hit a double with bases loaded allowing Smith, Newsom, and Bullard to score.
Sarah Marshall finished off the scoring with a home run over the center field fence.
In the second game, the Bruins were hot hitters at bat. PIU got on the board with a home run by
Kayli Cook and a steal to home from Marshall. Piedmont expanded their lead with a triple from Torres allowing Mastin and Presley to run it in. At the bottom of the fifth, Mastin would hit a grand slam directly followed by a home run from Marshall, her second on the day. Presley would put away the Eagles after adding the 10th run.Â

The Bruins will be back in action tomorrow and Saturday (Mar. 8 & 9) as they host CIU and Clack Summit University in a two-day doubleheader. Games will be at 1 & 3 PM.
