Bruins Battle in a Thrilling Five Set Victory

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 COLUMBIA, SC - The Piedmont International University volleyball team completed in another tri-match this weekend at Columbia International University. The Bruins fell in straight sets against Reinhardt College but came back and pulled out a thrilling five-set victory verse CIU.

Game 1: Piedmont vs. Reinhardt
Reinhardt took the opening set 25-12 after the Eagles went on a 14 to 3 point run to gain the 1-0 lead. The Bruins got as close as three points from the Eagles.

The Eagles would claim victory in the second set by a score of 25-8 for a 2-0 lead. Piedmont took an early lead before RU would tie up the game at six. Reinhardt would take ten of the final eleven points to win the set. 

RU would take the third set by a score of 25-23 to sweep the match. The teams would tie early in the set 9-9 before the Eagles would come back to take an 18-10 lead. The Bruins would respond with a run of their own getting the game within two points, 18-16. Reinhardt would eventually close out the set for the victory.

Mariah Robinson led the Bruins with four kills, while Lydia Horne and Chelsea Edwards each had three kills. Edwards led the Bruins with nine assists. The Bruins were strong on the back line as Kaylee Barriage recorded four service aces in the match, while Robinson had three. Cameron Dubuc led Piedmont with 13 digs, while Olivia Bullard finished with nine. Virgillia Jones and Horne recorded the lone team block.

Game 2: Piedmont vs. Columbia International
Coming out of the gate slow, Piedmont dropped the opening set against CIU 25-5. In the second set, the two teams were back and forth, tied at three, nine, 16, and 22. The Rams would take the final three points and the set 25-22.

Piedmont would take the third set 25-16. The Bruins jumped to an 18-13 lead after the majority of the match was within two points of each other. PIU capitalized on attack errors from the Rams and two kills from Jones to help them win the set.

The Bruins would take the third set 25-18 to hold off the Rams. The two teams were within one point of each other until a kill by Bullard and attack error from CIU extended the gap to three points, 10-7. PIU would earn five of the last seven points to take the set.

PIU would close out the match in thrilling fashion with a 15-13 win in the fifth set. The two teams battled back and forth early before the Bruins would take its 6-4 lead and turn it into a lead of 13-10. The Rams would come back and tie the match at 13. Piedmont would win the final two points off an attack error and service ace from Bullard.

Bullard posted 12 kills, while Jones posted nine kills for the Bruins. Edwards led Piedmont with three assists. Robinson led the team with 28 digs in the contest, while Dubuc added 18. 

The Bruins are back in action next Tuesday (Nov. 5) when they host their final home match of the regular season against St. Andrews University. The first serve is set for 6:30 PM.
