WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The PIU men's soccer team is the 2019 South Region Champions after a double-overtime victory (3-2) on Saturday (Nov. 16) against Brewton-Parker College.
The Bruins were first on the scoreboard after a penalty kick by
Mario Salinas sailed past the Barons keeper and into the back of the net. Piedmont's defense was strong as the rest of the half would remain scoreless.
Jeremiah Gibbs posted fantastic one-on-one saves.
In the second half, Brewton Parker found a goal of their own in the 49th minute. The Barons would take the lead for the first time, in the 68th minute, with their second goal.
Piedmont would respond to the lead change with five shots. In the 78ht,
Mario Salinas shot the ball cross-field finding
Marco Diaz, who was able to find the open goal. As regulation time ended, the game was tied up 2-2.
The first 10-minute overtime period would see three shots by the Barons and one shot from the Bruins. No goals.
In the second overtime period, the ball was a majority in possession of the Barons. With 3 minutes and 29 seconds left in the period,
Francisco Tapia sailed the ball across the field to
Marco Diaz. His high kicked ball slipped in the bottom left corner of the goal for the win. The Bruins would end the game 3-2.
Marco Diaz led the team with two shots on goal followed by
Mario Salinas and
Jason Mejia Moreno with one. Gibbs registered four saves.
As Regional Champions, the Bruins will travel to Kissimmee, FL, where they will compete in the NCCAA National Tournament December 2nd through 7th.
