ADVANCE, NC – The PIU men's soccer team picked up a victory on Monday against the Shaw University Bears by a score of 2-1. The win marks the Bruins sixth win overall.
The Bears were the first on the scoresheet in the eleventh minute as Marc Almazor was able to get behind the defense and score.Â
Two minutes before halftime, the Bruins were rewarded for their efforts as sophomore forward Francisco Tapia found junior fullback Jorge Espinoza Dominguez. Espinoza- Dominguez was able to squeeze in a deflected shot and go into the halftime break at 1-1.Â
The second half would see much of the same until the 87th minute when a long-range effort from Mario Salinas caught Shaw's keeper off of his line. Salinas looped the ball over him for the deciding goal in the game.Â
The shot count in the game favored PIU 15-12, with Salinas recording six on the night. Gibbs notched four saves in the game.Â
The Bruins will head to Columbia, SC, on Saturday as they face Columbia International University. Kickoff is set for 7 PM.
