ROCKY MOUNT, NC -- The Lady Bruins continued their hot start with a 2-match sweep against North Carolina Wesleyan College and Elizabeth City State University on Wednesday afternoon.
The first match featured N.C. Wesleyan (1-4), which the Lady Bruins took care in straight sets: Â 25-22, 25-21, 25-18.
Olivia Bullard led the team in kills, 11, and added 12 digs in the match.
Hannah Carter was credited with 22 assists, as well as having 2 service aces and 12 digs.
It was a defensive battle between the two teams, with PIU edging out N.C. Wesleyan, 82 to 43, in digs tallied.
Cameron Dubuc led the team with 29 digs and 3 service aces, while McKenzie Mastin and
Alexia Infante added 14 and 11 digs, respectively.
Infante mentioned, "our team did well in regards to persevering. Although, we may have started off slow, our team continued to fight point by point to finish and win the set."

In the second match, PIU extended their record to 7-1, defeating Elizabeth City State University, ECSU, (0-5) with scores of 25-20, 28-26, 25-18.
Virgillia Jones led the team with 6 kills while hitting .308 and
Mariah Robinson added 4 kills in the match.
Chelsea Edwards tallied 14 assists during the contest, while adding 3 kills and 4 service aces.
It was a service battle in the closely contested second set as the Lady Bruins trailed Elizabeth City, 6-11.Â
Lexi Dupre went on a serving run to tie the game to 11 apiece. Dupre also led the team with 8 digs during the match. The Lady Bruins took the lead at 15-13 as
Chelsea Edwards began her service ace run. Unfortunately for the Lady Bruins, ECSU also had a serving specialist and took control at 22-18 after a few aces of their own.
It was not until
Daylin Schweizer, a defensive specialist, came in to serve for the Lady Bruins to tie and take over the lead in the set at 24-23. After a few back and forth points between the two teams, PIU prevailed and took the second set, 28-26.
Captain
Cameron Dubuc added 7 digs for the team while Schweizer contributed 4 digs of her own. Reflecting on the match, Dubuc stated, "we worked well as a cohesive unit for the first time this season. We picked up each other's weaknesses, and in the end that's what brought us out on top."
The Lady Bruins are heading to Columbia, South Carolina on Saturday, September 8th for their second consecutive Tri-Match. They will be facing Allen University (5-3) and Benedict College (0-3).
