Winston-Salem, NC -- The Lady Bruins volleyball team split their matches on Saturday at Allen University after two 5 set matches. Their record after the tri-match is at 8-2.
The first match of the day, PIU came out on top against Allen University, 3-2. The Lady Bruins went back and forth with Allen set for set. After dropping the first set 23-25, PIU came back to win the next set 26-24. The next three sets were 14-25, 25-13, and 15-13 respectively. Kelsey McKinley led the team in kills with 17, while Olivia Bullard wasn't far behind with 15. Cydne Moore added 4 blocks for the Bruins. Cameron Dubuc lead the team in digs with 22 while Hannah Carter racked up 49 assists.
The second match of the day didn't end as positively as the previous. In another 5 set match, the Lady Bruins fell short of Benedict College 2-3. After coming out on top in the first set 25-19, the Lady Bruins dropped the next two sets 17-25 and 22-25. Bruins rallied back to win the next set 25-22, but dropped the deciding set in a nail biter 14-16. Moore led the team in blocks with 3, Bullard finished a double-double with 14 kills and 13 digs. Dubuc led the team in digs with 22, while Carter and Chelsea Edwards earned 20 and 18 assists respectively.
Head Coach Chelsea Jones commented on the weekend: "Both matches we play this weekend were good for us. Allen and Benedict are both very scrappy and talented teams. We learned a lot about our team and know that we are in a good place to improve for our future matches."
The volleyball team is next in action on Monday, September 10 at home verse Columbia College. The scheduled game time is 6:00 PM.
