Box Score Winston-Salem, NC -- Piedmont played a physical back-and-forth match on Monday evening versus the Johnson and Wales Wildcats that ended in a heartbreaking loss of 3-4 in double overtime.
The Bruins claimed the opening goal of the game in the 19th minute as Eric Smiley maneuvered around the keeper. In the 26th minute, Johnson and Wales responded with a goal of their own, tying the game 1-1.
Smiley helped Piedmont obtain the lead again, as he found his second goal of the evening in the 28th minute. The Wildcats launched a ball in goal to tie up the match once again, 2-2.
In the 63rd minute, Smiley scored his third and final goal on the night, marking an amazing hattrick. Johnson and Wales did not give up on the fight though and added a goal of their own. Regular play ended 3-3.
It wasn't until the second overtime that the Bruins and Wildcats saw action on the scoreboard. After a penalty on Tony Ramirez, Johnson and Wales was give a chance at a penalty kick. The Wildcat's ball slipped past Ramirez, ending the game 4-3.
Piedmont dominated the shot total in the match, 17-11. The shot leaders for the Bruins were Eric Smiley, Marco Diaz, and Jose Perez who all marked four shots each. Ramirez tailed 5 saves in goal.
The Bruins will be back in action this Friday when they travel to Regent University in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Game time is 7 PM.
