Women’s Soccer Blank Shaw, 2-0, to Secure Second Straight Victory

RALEIGH, N.C. — Carolina University Women's Soccer continued its recent momentum Friday afternoon, earning a 2-0 shutout victory over Shaw University at WRAL Soccer Park.

Coming off a cold, rain-soaked victory over Bluefield State that gave the Bruins their first win of the season, Carolina entered Friday's 1:30 p.m. kickoff looking to build on that performance. The Bruins did just that, scoring once in each half while keeping Shaw off the scoreboard to improve to 2-2-3 on the season.

Carolina wasted little time establishing control. Just 3:54 into the match, Destini Wilson put the Bruins in front with her second goal of the season. Emily Avila provided the assist as Carolina grabbed an early 1-0 advantage.

The Bruins continued to generate opportunities throughout the opening half, recording eight shots and seven corner kicks while limiting Shaw to just one shot. Carolina carried its 1-0 advantage into halftime.

Carolina's defense remained strong after the break, preventing Shaw from finding an equalizer. The Bruins finally added some insurance in the 83rd minute when Peyton Battilla found the back of the net for her first goal of the season, extending the lead to 2-0.

The Bruins controlled the match statistically, finishing with a 12-4 advantage in shots, including a 9-1 edge in shots on goal, while also holding a commanding 12-2 advantage in corner kicks. Destini Wilson and Peyton Battilla accounted for Carolina's two goals, while Emily Avila recorded the assist.

In goal, Waleska Gonzalez played all 90 minutes and made one save to record the clean sheet. Carolina's back line helped hold Shaw to only one shot on goal for the entire match.

"I thought our group did a great job of carrying the momentum from Wednesday into today," Head Coach Boo Tesh said. "We came out with good energy, got the early goal and stayed disciplined for the full 90 minutes. Getting back-to-back wins and another clean sheet is a great step forward for this group. Now our focus is on finishing this stretch strong before fall break."

The victory gives Carolina back-to-back wins as the Bruins continue to build momentum following a challenging start to the season.

Carolina University will look to extend its winning streak to three when the Bruins travel to Toccoa Falls College on Wednesday, September 30, for a 6 p.m. kickoff. The matchup will be Carolina's final contest before fall break.
