Bruins Women’s Soccer Fall in Defensive Battle at WVU Tech

BECKLEY, W.Va. — After opening the 2026 season with back-to-back draws, Carolina University Women's Soccer entered Wednesday night's matchup at West Virginia University Institute of Technology looking to break into the win column. The Bruins battled throughout the full 90 minutes but came up just short in a 1-0 loss to WVU Tech at Paul Cline Stadium.

The result moves Carolina to 0-1-2 on the season.

Carolina nearly provided an immediate breakthrough as Selah Hampton put a shot on goal just five seconds into the contest, forcing WVU Tech goalkeeper Irene Saldaña into an early save. The Golden Bears eventually found the game's only goal in the 22nd minute when Shiloh Goodwin scored off an assist from Korinne Potter to give WVU Tech a 1-0 advantage.

The Bruins went into halftime trailing by one and continued to battle defensively throughout the second half. WVU Tech applied consistent pressure after the break, but Carolina goalkeeper Waleska Gonzalez helped keep the Bruins within striking distance with three second-half saves. Gonzalez finished the night with four saves while allowing just one goal in 90 minutes.

Carolina generated another opportunity late in the contest when Ashley Sanchez put a shot on frame in the 84th minute, but Saldaña made the save to preserve WVU Tech's advantage. Ashley Sanchez and Selah Hampton accounted for Carolina's two shots on goal, while Chelsea Prescott added the Bruins' other shot.

WVU Tech finished with a 17-3 advantage in total shots and a 5-2 edge in shots on goal. The Golden Bears also held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks, while both teams were whistled for eight fouls.

Head Coach Boo Tesh credited her team's fight despite not getting the result it wanted.

"We knew going on the road that we were going to have to compete for the full 90 minutes, and I thought our group continued to fight all the way to the final whistle," Tesh said. "There are things we have to clean up and continue to improve, but I like the resilience this team continues to show. We have to take what we learned tonight, get back to work and be ready for another tough road test on Saturday."

The Bruins will have another opportunity to secure their first victory of the season when they travel to Rio Grande (Ohio) on Saturday, September 12, for a 5 p.m. kickoff.
