Bruins Baseball Drop Series Opener at Bluefield State

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. — The Carolina University Bruins baseball team opened its final regular season series on Friday, April 24, falling 8-3 to Bluefield State in a nine-inning contest at Bowen Field.

Carolina University (21-24) totaled 11 hits on the night but was unable to overcome a five-run third inning by Bluefield State, which proved to be the difference in the game.

The Bruins saw production throughout the lineup, with Ty Vespe recording a multi-hit performance and driving in a run, while Jase Brooks and DJ Biggers each added two hits. Carolina broke through late, plating one run in the seventh and two more in the eighth inning to narrow the deficit.

On the mound, Jasean Brown took the loss after tossing seven innings, allowing seven runs on 12 hits while striking out six. Grant Polk added an inning of relief.

Bluefield State capitalized on timely hitting, finishing with 12 hits and scoring in four separate innings to secure the win.

"Despite the result, we continued to compete and showed resilience late in the game," said Associate Head Coach Logan Conklin. "We'll look to carry that momentum into Sunday and finish the series strong."

The Bruins and Big Blues were originally scheduled to continue the series Saturday, but inclement weather forced a postponement. The teams will now return to the field Sunday, April 26, for a doubleheader to conclude the regular season series.
