Bruins Dominate Opener, Secure Doubleheader Sweep Over Fisher College

MOCKSVILLE, NC - Carolina University Baseball returned to Rich Park over the weekend, hosting conference opponent Fisher College for a pair of doubleheaders on Friday, April 10 and Saturday, April 11. The Bruins showcased offensive firepower and timely pitching, highlighted by a dominant Game 1 victory and a hard-fought Game 2 win on Friday.

Game 1: Carolina 17, Fisher 2

Carolina wasted no time setting the tone in the series opener, exploding for 17 runs on 18 hits in a run-rule victory over Fisher.

The Bruins plated multiple runs in five of six innings, including a six-run sixth inning to put the game out of reach.

Leading the offensive charge was Chandler Smithart, who went 3-for-4 with four runs scored and four RBIs. Ben Gambrell added a 3-for-4 performance with three RBIs and four runs scored, while Ty Vespe contributed three hits at the top of the lineup.

On the mound, Jasean Brown delivered a complete-game effort, allowing just two runs on six hits while striking out seven to earn the win.

Carolina's balanced attack saw contributions throughout the lineup, finishing with 13 RBIs and capitalizing on Fisher's four defensive errors.

Game 2: Carolina 7, Fisher 6

The nightcap proved to be a much tighter contest, but the Bruins held off a late Fisher rally to complete the sweep with a 7-6 victory.

After falling behind early, Carolina responded with a five-run second inning, highlighted by timely hitting and aggressive baserunning. The Bruins added two more runs in the fourth, which ultimately proved to be the difference.

Chandler Smithart continued his strong day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Ty Vespe added two hits and scored twice. Danny Gonzalez provided a key spark with a solo home run.

Cameron Gribble earned the win on the mound, tossing six innings and striking out seven. Landon Johnson closed the door in the seventh inning, securing the save despite a late push from Fisher.

Coach's Comments

Associate Head Coach Logan Conklin praised the team's overall performance and consistency across both games:

"I thought we came out with great energy in Game 1 and really set the tone offensively. In Game 2, we showed toughness—finding ways to respond and finish a close game. That's the kind of complete effort we're looking for as we continue conference play."

Carolina University Baseball hopes to carry that momentum into Saturday's doubleheader, continuing their homestand against Fisher College as they look to build on a strong conference showing. Carolina hosting Fisher College on Saturday April, 11 with a doubleheader starting at 12pm at Mando Field at Rich Park.
