Baseball Open Conference Play with Pair of Narrow Losses at Florida National

HIALEAH, Fla. — The Carolina University Bruins baseball team opened conference play on Friday, March 27 with a doubleheader at Florida National, dropping a pair of tightly contested games despite late-inning pushes in both contests. Coming off a challenging stretch that included a series loss to Toccoa Falls and a midweek sweep at Bluefield, the Bruins showed resilience but were unable to secure a win to begin conference action.

Game 1: Florida National 5, Carolina 4

Carolina rallied late but fell just short in the opener, 5-4.

  • Top Performers:

    • Peyton Horn: 3-for-3, 2 RBI

    • Danny Gonzalez: 1-for-3, RBI, walk

    • Chandler Smithart: 1-for-3, run, walk

The Bruins trailed 4-0 before breaking through in the sixth inning on Horn's two-RBI single. Carolina added two more runs in the seventh to cut the deficit to one, but Florida National held on behind a scoreless final inning from its bullpen.

On the mound, Jasean Brown struck out six over five innings, while Jacob Myers allowed one run in relief.

Game 2: Florida National 6, Carolina 5

Carolina carried a late lead into the final inning, but Florida National used a four-run seventh to walk off with a 6-5 victory.

  • Top Performers:

    • Chandler Smithart: 2-for-4, RBI, run

    • Daniel Isbell: 2-for-5, RBI, double

    • Leland Brown: 4 walks, run scored

The Bruins built a 5-2 lead through six innings, capitalizing on aggressive baserunning and patient at-bats. However, defensive miscues in the bottom of the seventh allowed Florida National to rally, scoring four runs—three unearned—to secure the sweep.

Cameron Gribble delivered a strong start with six strikeouts over 5.2 innings, while Abraham Leal was charged with the loss in relief.

Coach's Quote

"We competed much better today and showed fight all the way through both games," said Associate Head Coach Logan Conklin. "We put ourselves in position to win, but we have to clean up the small details—especially defensively—if we want to close games out in conference play."
