Carolina University Softball Splits Doubleheader at Fayetteville State

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Carolina University Softball battled through a competitive road doubleheader against Fayetteville State University on Saturday, March 14, splitting the day with an extra-inning loss in game one before bouncing back with a strong 8-5 victory in game two.

Interim Head Coach Danielle Brooks praised her team's response following the tough opening loss.

"I'm proud of how our team responded after a hard-fought first game. We showed resilience, competed every inning, and found ways to execute when it mattered most in game two," said Brooks. "This group continues to grow, and we're excited to build on this heading into our next matchup."


Game 1: Fayetteville State 6, Carolina 5 (8 Innings)

Carolina opened the doubleheader with a strong offensive showing, recording 13 hits and building a 5-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. However, Fayetteville State used a late surge, including a game-tying three-run home run, before walking it off in extra innings.

  • Nathaly Ochoa: 2-for-3, 1 run, 2 walks
     

  • Chloe Herbster: 3-for-4, 1 run
     

  • Skyla Hailey: 3-for-4, 1 RBI
     

  • Emma-Lea Cabral: 2-for-3, HR, 2 RBI
     

Carolina struck first with a three-run third inning highlighted by a two-RBI double from Jocelyn DeMoss and an RBI double from Cabral. The Bruins added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings, including Cabral's solo home run.

Fayetteville State answered late, scoring four runs in the seventh inning to tie the game before securing the win in the eighth on a walk-off sequence.


Game 2: Carolina 8, Fayetteville State 5

Carolina responded in game two with a complete team effort, overcoming multiple tie situations and pulling away late for an 8-5 victory.

  • Jocelyn DeMoss: 2-for-4, 2 runs, 2 RBI
     

  • Emma-Lea Cabral: 2-for-5, HR, 2 RBI
     

  • Chloe Herbster: 2-for-5, 2 RBI
     

  • Nathaly Ochoa: 1-for-3, 2 runs, 2 walks
     

After a scoreless start, Carolina broke through in the fifth inning with two runs before Fayetteville State answered to tie the game. Cabral's two-run home run in the eighth gave Carolina a 4-2 lead, but Fayetteville State responded again to even the score.

The Bruins delivered the decisive blow in the ninth inning, scoring four runs behind clutch hits from Nathaly Ochoa and Joeclyn DeMoss to secure the win.

In the circle, Madison Hamilton was dominant in relief, pitching eight innings to earn the win while allowing just five runs (three earned) and striking out three.


Carolina University Softball returns to action on Wednesday, March 18, as they travel to take on Bluefield State in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
