Bruins Sweep Bluefield in Home Doubleheader; Carry Momentum into Busy Week Ahead

Madison Hamilton throws no-hitter in Game 2 of the doubleheader

Winston-Salem, N.C. – Carolina University Softball continued its strong early-season push on Wednesday, February 25, sweeping a home doubleheader against Bluefield University at Wilson Park. The Bruins used timely hitting, dominant pitching, and late-game execution to secure victories in both contests as they built momentum heading into a packed stretch of games.

Game 1 – Carolina 5, Bluefield 4

Carolina battled back from an early deficit to claim a 5-4 comeback victory in the opener.

Bluefield struck first with a four-run second inning, capitalizing on walks and a defensive miscue to take control early. The Bruins responded steadily, beginning with a first-inning run before chipping away late.

Carolina plated a run in the fifth on an RBI groundout from Jocelyn DeMoss, then erupted in the sixth when Anni Bergmeier delivered an RBI single and Chloe Herbster followed with a run-scoring hit to tie the game.

The decisive moment came in the bottom of the seventh. With runners on, Anni Bergmeier again delivered—this time lacing a walk-off RBI double to secure the 5-4 win.

Game 1 Key Performers

  • Anni Bergmeier – 3-for-4, 2 RBI; also earned the complete-game win in the circle

  • Emma-Lea Cabral – 2-for-3, 2 doubles

Anni Bergmeier was outstanding in the circle, tossing all 7 innings while allowing 4 hits and striking out key batters to hold off Bluefield's offense.

Game 2 – Carolina 8, Bluefield 0 (5 innings)

The Bruins left no doubt in Game 2, erupting offensively and dominating in the circle for an 8-0 run-rule victory.

Carolina scored in four of five innings, highlighted by a three-run fourth and two-run fifth to close the game early.

From Head Coach Jay Johnson

"I'm proud of how our group competed all day. Game one showed our resilience—fighting back and executing in big moments—and then to come out and dominate game two really speaks to our focus. We're building momentum at the right time and looking forward to carrying this energy into the games ahead."

Up Next

Carolina now turns its attention to the road as the Bruins travel to Cocoa Beach, Florida, to compete in the Space Coast Spring Games, where they will play six games during the tournament stretch.

With confidence building and all phases clicking, Carolina looks poised to make noise as the early season continues.
