Game Recap: Softball |

Bruins Softball Suffer Doubleheader Losses Against Spartanburg Methodist

Winston-Salem, N.C. – Carolina University Softball returned to Wilson Park on Thursday, February 19, looking to bounce back after opening the season against Lees-McRae. Despite showing improved offensive production on opening day, the Bruins were tested in different ways across both games of their doubleheader against Spartanburg Methodist, ultimately splitting the twin bill.

Game 1 – Pitchers' Duel Highlights Opening Contest

Game one featured a tightly contested defensive battle, with both teams relying on strong pitching performances throughout the afternoon. Spartanburg Methodist edged Carolina University 2-0 in a low-scoring affair.

Carolina starter Madison Hamilton delivered a complete-game effort in the circle, allowing just two runs — both unearned — while scattering five hits across seven innings. She also worked around multiple hit batters to keep the Bruins within striking distance.

Offensively, the Bruins recorded four hits, highlighted by a two-hit performance from Anni Bergmeier, including a double. Nathaly Ochoa added a hit and two stolen bases to spark Carolina's baserunning pressure.

Despite several late opportunities — including baserunners in the fifth and seventh innings — Carolina was unable to push a run across as Spartanburg Methodist pitcher Bailey Kiser completed the shutout with nine strikeouts.

Game 2 – Bruins Strike Early, Spartans Respond

The second game saw a dramatic offensive shift. Carolina jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Emma-Lea Cabral highlighted the frame with a two-run home run, while Emily Wilson added an RBI single to give the Bruins early momentum.

Spartanburg Methodist responded with a dominant second inning and continued to build throughout the game, ultimately claiming an 18-3 win in five innings.

Carolina finished with seven hits in the contest. Jocelyn DeMoss recorded two hits, while Cabral's home run accounted for two of the Bruins' three runs.

Coach's Quote

Head Coach Jay Johnson reflected on the day's performances and the team's growth early in the season:

"We saw two very different games today, but both provided valuable lessons for our group. Our pitching competed well in game one, and we showed we can generate offense early in game two. We're continuing to grow, and the quick turnaround is another opportunity for us to respond and improve."

Up Next

Carolina University Softball will look to carry lessons from the doubleheader into the weekend as they travel to face Columbia International on Saturday, February 21, for another doubleheader — weather permitting.
