Fort Lauderdale, FL – May 2, 2025 – In a thrilling, extra-inning affair at Davis Field, the Paine College Lions clawed their way to a 12-10 victory over the Carolina University Bruins in an elimination game on day two of the NCCAA South Region Tournament. The contest, stretching into twelve dramatic innings, saw momentum swings and resilient play from both sides, ultimately ending the Bruins' tournament run.
Paine College, entering the game with a 15-22 record, showcased incredible grit against a Carolina University team that held a 26-18 standing. The game was a seesaw battle from the start. While the first few innings remained scoreless, Carolina University drew first blood in the bottom of the 4th inning, taking a 1-0 lead. Paine College responded in the top of the 5th, leveling the score at 1-1.
The back-and-forth continued as both teams traded runs. Paine College added two runs in the top of the 7th to take a 3-2 lead, but Carolina answered with a run in the bottom of the same inning to tie the game at 3-3, forcing extra innings.
The drama intensified in the 11th inning. Paine managed to push four runs across the plate, seemingly taking control of the game with a 7-3 lead. However, Carolina U demonstrated remarkable resilience. In the bottom of the 11th, the Bruins rallied for four runs of their own, tying the score once again at 7-7 and extending the game.
The decisive moment came in the top of the 12th inning. Paine College exploded for five runs, taking a commanding 12-7 lead. Carolina University fought valiantly in their half of the inning, managing to score three runs, but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit. Paine College secured the final out, sealing a hard-fought 12-10 victory and advancing in the tournament.
Several players stood out for Paine College. L. Sellam had an exceptional day at the plate, recording four hits, including two triples and a double, and driving in three runs. E. Segura also contributed significantly with three hits and two RBIs. On the pitching side, K. Carter earned the win for the Lions.
For Carolina University,
Madison Hamilton had a strong offensive performance with five hits and two RBIs. Despite their efforts,
Danielle Brooks was credited with the loss in a game that saw a total of 35 hits between both teams.
This thrilling elimination game highlighted the competitive spirit of the NCCAA South Region Tournament. Paine College's determination in the face of adversity allowed them to overcome a late deficit and secure a crucial victory, keeping their tournament hopes alive while ending Carolina University's journey.
