Game Recap: Softball | | Hope Turbyfill, Sports Information Director

Day 1 of the NCCAA South Region Softball Tournament

Augusta, GA- Carolina University Softball started the NCCAA South Region tournament with games at 4:00 PM and 9:00 PM yesterday. The tournament's first day brought thrilling softball action, featuring some closely contested matches. 

Game 1 

Your Lady Bruins faced #3 The University of Fort Lauderdale in the tournament's opening round. The Eagles initially took the lead in the 1st inning, but the Bruins fought back. The score remained tied at 4-4 until the 5th and 6th innings when the Eagles managed to secure a 2-run lead. Despite their efforts, the Blue and Gold couldn't overcome the deficit.

Graduate student Grace Johnson began the night impressively, launching a home run during her first at-bat. Johnson scored the sole run of the 1st inning and the only home run of the game. In the 2nd inning, with two runners on bases, Nicole Otto hit a triple into left field, driving in two RBIs and bringing both base runners home. Following Otto's hit, Johnson executed a sacrifice fly to bring Otto back to home plate, leveling the score at 4-4. The Bruins finished the 1st game 4-6, in the double elimination bracket. 

Game 2

On Day 1, in the second game of the tournament, the Bruins faced off against The Lions of Paine College at 9:00 that night. It proved to be a tight contest, but the Blue and Gold emerged victorious. The Bruins concluded the game with a narrow 5-4 win over the Lions, adding another close match to their record.

Junior Grace Andrews secured the only home run of the game in the 5th inning, bringing in 2 RBIs and extending the lead to 5-2. Although the Lions managed to score two more runs, one in the bottom of the 5th and another in the bottom of the 7th, the Bruins' defense held strong, preventing the Lions from equalizing the score. With this win, the Bruins secure their spot in the next round of the tournament.

Pitching for the Bruins' was Madison Hamilton, tallying 3 strike outs in her 7 innings.

Up Next 

The Lady Bruins will square off against Trinity Baptist College on May 8th at 10:30 AM, aiming to advance to the semi-finals.
