Rocky Mount, NC - This weekend, Carolina University Women's Basketball competed in the Jean Edge Classic. Their first game was on Friday, November 11th against Averett University. The Cougars started off with a 5 point run but the Bruins found their footing and closed out the first quarter with a 17-12 lead. CU maintained that momentum and were able to get a 17 point lead on the Cougars by halftime. The Bruins were able to stretch their lead to 20 points in the third quarter. Averett tried to get to the basket but they weren't a match for Carolina's defense. CU took their first game of the tournament with a score of 65-43.Â
Although the Bruins had a few key players out this weekend, it did not stop them. Kevanika Brown stepped up and led CU with 21 points, followed by Ashley Roberts with 17 points and 10 rebounds.Â
On Saturday, November 12th, the Bruins played North Carolina Wesleyan College. The Battling Bishops were in the lead to start, but CU responded and took a 13-12 lead by the end of the first quarter. NC Wesleyan was more aggressive offensively in the second quarter and went into halftime with a lead of 27-21. The Bruins made efforts to keep up, but weren't able to get ahead. NC Wesleyan continued to advance and finished 64-54.Â
Kevanika Brown once again led the Bruins in scoring with 19 points. Jada Ballard and Chloe Burns both recorded 7 rebounds. The Jean Edge Classic selected Kevanika Brown and Ashley Roberts to the All-Tournament Team for their strong efforts this weekend..
