WINSTON-SALEM, NC -- Carolina University Baseball hosted St. Andrews University on February 10th. The Bruins and the Knights each entered the game with a 2-2 record and wanted to get above .500 in the early part of the season. St. Andrews opened with a first inning run, and had the bases loaded. Carolina University was able to get out of the jam without allowing another run to score. The Bruins got the bats going early with 2 first inning runs of their own. Each team was seeing the ball well and finding ways to score through the early going. The Knights found themselves up 7-6 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Bruins were not beat.
Grant Harris hit the Bruins' only homerun of the game to even the score at 7-7. This sparked a Bruins rally that saw Kent drive in Deegan for the go-ahead run. Carolina University's pitching and defense were excellent down the stretch allowing just 1 hit and no runs to close-out the win 8-7.
The Bruins utilized 9 different pitchers in this game.
Lucas Shannon made short work of the 7 batters he faced by striking out 3 and using just 23 pitches.
Charlee Edwards earned the save by eliminating the side in the top of the 9th, including 2 strikeouts. At the plate, the Bruins were led by
Josh Kent who went 3-4 with 2 doubles and scored twice.
Grant Harris went 1-3 with his first homerun of the year. However, the Burins weren't without other power as Hawthorne, Conklin, Greenwood, and Deegan all had doubles.
Carolina University now is 3-2 on the season. After some cancellations due to weather, The Bruins will play the St. Andrews Knights again on February 19th and 20th. Carolina University will be in Laurinburg, NC for an away double-header on Friday the 19th. The Bruins will return home and host the Knights in another double header on Saturday the 20th.Â
