MONTREAT, NC -- The Carolina University Women's Basketball Team traveled to play against Montreat College on Tuesday, November 3rd. The Cavaliers jumped out early and home and held a 20-11 lead after the first quarter. The Bruins were more competitive in the second quarter, but still found themselves down 37-23 at the half. Coach Lee was able to get the Bruins back on track at halftime. Carolina University came out of the locker room with a strong third quarter. The Bruins outscored the Cavaliers 17-8 in the third and were on the comeback. In the fourth quarter, CU completed the comeback and took a 58-57 lead. However, the game was not over. After a few back and forth possessions, the Cavaliers retook the lead and made enough free throws down the stretch to earn the 65-62 victory.
Despite the loss, the Bruins did have some big time performances.
Denasia Mitchell posted career marks in points, rebounds, and steals. Mitchell scored a game-high 24 points, grabbed a team-high 8 rebounds, and 4 steals.
Taia Smith and
Malayah Montgomery also reached double-figures in points with 14 and 11 respectively.
Ni'Jaa Wells also had a solid night with 7 points and 6 rebounds.
Carolina University now falls to 0-3, but will have an opportunity to right the ship this week. The Bruins will travel to Charlotte on Monday, November 8th to play at Johnson & Wales for a 6:00PM tip-off. Later in the week, CU will be in Greenville, SC to play two games hosted by Bob Jones University. On Friday night November 12th, Carolina University will play Bob Jones and stick around for an additional game on Saturday afternoon.
