Winston-Salem, NC -- The Piedmont International University baseball team swept the Bryant & Stratton College Bobcats, , 9-2 and 2-0, in the first-ever doubleheader between the two teams on Tuesday (Mar. 5).
In the first inning of game one,
Bryan Deegan and
Eli Straw scored on a
Samuel Nieves-Suarez double. Nieves-Suarez then scored later in the inning to finish the first, 3-0. The Bruins were hot hitters in the first game recording a total of three home runs. The first home run was hit by
John Giboyeaux who drove the ball over the left field fence. Giboyeaux's home run brought in 2 other runners, making the score 6-0.
Bryant & Stratton responded with one run in each the fourth and fifth inning.
Jacob Ladley then entered the game as the relief pitcher and would shut out the Bobcats for the rest of the game.Â
Nieves-Suarez and
Eli Straw had the final two home runs of the game in the fifth and sixth inning. Straw's homer would allow
Bryan Deegan to add a run for the Bruins. Piedmont won their first game against the Bobcats and of the season, 9-2.
In the game two, Piedmont jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning after a run by
Lemonte Johnson and Giboyeaux. These would end up being the only two runs of the game. The Bruins and Bobcats played tight defense in the field, keeping the following innings scoreless. In the final inning at bat, the bases were loaded for BSC with only one out. Josh Arent subbed into the game where he struck out the last two batters, putting away the Bobcats and closing out the game for the Bruins.Â
Weston Markle,
Darin Spivey, and
Joshua Arent were dominant on the mound, pitching seven scoreless innings for Piedmont.
The Bruins will be back in action on Friday as they open their series with Talladega College. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
