Winston-Salem, NC -- The Bruins kicked off their regular season play with a Tri-Game Tournament sweep. They traveled to Mid-Atlantic Christian University where they defeated Christendom College (3-1) and Mid-Atlantic (3-0).
The first match started out slow for the Bruins. With a last minute attempt to take the game, Hannah Carter went on a serving streak, but it was not enough and PIU dropped the first set 22-25. Once the Bruins got in rhythm, the following sets went smoother with scores of 25-15, 25-20, and 25-12. Olivia Bullard led the team in kills with 19, while Hannah Carter tallied 45 assists. Carter also lead the team in digs and aces with 21 and 5 respectively. Bullard picked up 15 digs while Mackenzie Mastin and Cameron Dubuc added 14 and 11 digs.
The second match also proved to help the Bruins' record with a 3-0 set win, which included scores of 25-13, 25-6, and 25-21. Lexi Dupre led the team in kills with 7, while Chelsea Edwards added 23 assists and 4 aces.
Head Coach Chelsea Jones was happy with the team's opening weekend. "It's still very early in the season, but I saw so many moments of brilliance. I am excited to get back in the gym and build on the things we witnessed this weekend."
The Bruins are next in action on Tuesday, August 28 at 6:00 PM as they host Allen University.
