Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Battles Back After Break, Falls 76–73 to Columbia on New Year’s Eve

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Carolina University Men's Basketball returned to action for the first time since December 16, hosting Columbia College (S.C.) on New Year's Eve inside Williams Gymnasium. The Bruins showed early energy and late resolve, but a second-half rally came up just short in a 76–73 decision.

Carolina wasted no time shaking off the holiday rust, opening the game on a 17–7 run over the first six minutes. The Bruins pushed the tempo early, attacking in transition and establishing rhythm on both ends of the floor.

Columbia responded with a run of its own midway through the half, gradually swinging momentum. The visitors closed the opening period strong and took a 41–37 lead into halftime.

The second half featured multiple lead changes as Carolina continued to battle back, cutting into the deficit with improved shooting and defensive pressure. The Bruins outscored Columbia 36–35 after the break and had chances down the stretch, but Columbia converted at the free-throw line late to seal the outcome.

DJ Evans led Carolina with 23 points, including 16 in the second half, while Tristan Kuska added 15 points and seven rebounds. Shawn Woodson chipped in nine points, and Enock Rosil provided a spark off the bench with six points and seven rebounds.

Despite the loss, head coach Jacob Heck was encouraged by the effort coming out of the break.

"I liked the way we competed after being off for a couple of weeks," said Heck. "We started the game with great energy and never stopped fighting. Now it's about cleaning up the little things late and carrying this intensity forward."

Carolina will look to build on the performance as the Bruins continue into the heart of their schedule as they travel to Milligan University on Saturday January 4th with tipoff being at 4pm.
